Boeing Global Aviation Market Prospect Press Conference
Boeing held a press conference on the global aviation market prospect at its Korea branch office on June 16 and expected the traffic volume in Northeast Asia to grow by 2.2% annually over the next 20 years on the strength of the rapid growth of low-cost aviation market in Korea. Randy Tinseth, vice president of marketing for Boeing commercial airplanes, said Korea's low-cost airlines account for more than 50 percent of the domestic market, which is the highest level in Northeast Asia. Introducing Boeing's outlook for the next 20 years for Notheast Aisa, Tinseth said, "Due to the rapid growth of low-cost airlines in Korea, the number of annual travelers to and from Korea since 2010 has doubled and continues to record. On the strength of the revival of the middle class and the increased number of flights to new destinations, the number of travelers will continue to increase over the next 20 years." ▲ Randy Tinseth, vice president of marketing for Boeing commercial airplanes, introduced Boeing's outlook for the next 20 years for Northeast Asia. Boeing expects airlines in Northeast Asia will need 1,470 units between 2017 and 2036, and a new commercial aircraft worth more than US $320 billion. Based on this, a total of 1,510 aircraft will be operated by 2036. Approximately 620 units, which is about half of these aircraft, will be occupied by widebody models such as the 787 and 777, and other 660 units will be narrow-body models such as 737 MAX and 660. Tinseth foresees that large network airlines in Northeast Asia region will reconfigure operating aircraft to meet dynamic market needs. He said, "Over the past two decades, large network airlines in the region have opted for changes to increase the number of flights and destinations, instead of reducing the number of seats by 20 percent." He also stated, "These changes demonstrate that efficient new widebody aircrafts such as the Boeing 787 are contributing to expanding the market and leading customers to new destinations. “ Korean Air, which is actively responding to these changes in the aviation market, is headed by the first 787 Dreamliner earlier this year and plans to operate five of the ten 787s ordered by the end of 2017. ▲ The global trend is driven by LCC and increasing demand for air travel, driven by demand or technological innovation. Global airfreight volume increased 8% from last year and domestic airfreight market profitability rebounded. In Korea, airfreight volumes of Korean Air and Asiana increased 12% and 15% respectively in the second quarter of this year. Boeing expects to introduce 130 medium-sized freightters worth US $50 billion over the next 20 years. Tinseth said, "The airfreight market achieved the most successful first half-year performance since the global financial crisis in 2010. With Asian airlines including Korean Air and Asiana Airlines, all the regions are growing this year. New efficient freighters such as Boeing 747-8F and 777F currently operated by Korean Air will contribute significantly to the airfreight market in the future." Boeing foresees that airlines around the world will invest US $ 6.1 trillion for delivery of 41,030 new aircraft over the next 20 years. More detailed prospects can be found on the Boeing.com web page. ▲ Boeing has a proven civil aircraft lineup ranging from single-passenger compact aircrafts to widebody bumper-type aircrafts. ▲ The 787, which had been produced 12 units in a month, will be produced 14 units by 2019. Victory of technology innovation. Q1. (Acrofan) ADEX 2017 will start from October 17th. Today, there is also an IPO host company announcement by T'way Air. In addition, domestic LCC companies are becoming increasingly popular. In the midst of this trend, last week, Airbus announced to launch and showcase A330neo. What is Boeing's response plan? (Randy Tinseth) Boeing is also participating in ADEX 2017. A simulator will be installed on site to provide opportunity to the flight of 787. In the airshow site, we plan to take both a commercial and military approach. I think it was a good thing to have introduced A330neo aircraft on Airbus earlier. Because they are in a situation where they have to make an urgent order. This sounds like a humor. Looking at the market, LCC performance was very good. What would be the next step? In the previous examples, LCCs are aiming to operate longer distances. Looking at other LCCs around the world, Scoop and Jetstar, which operate 787 model, are already in business. In the long term, it is expected that LCCs will aim at this model. Q2. With the opening of Incheon International Airport Terminal 2, expect to the increase of the number of flight slots for accommodating widebody models in relation to long distance routes is huge. At Boeing, do you think the opening of Terminal 2 will contribute to increasing aircraft demand? (Randy Tinseth) Basically, I think that long-term growth plan is very important for the organization. One step of long-term growth at Incheon International Airport will be the opening of Terminal 2. This provides better service in long-term to customers based in Seoul, and improves cargo transportation performance to and from Korea. Of course, with the opening of a new terminal, the market will be expanded and better services will be provided. This will eventually lead to more opportunities for all airlines to and from Korea. It will not only contribute to the LCC and the network in Korea, it will be useful for everyone who travels to Korea.
LOT Polish Airlines Celebrated Delivery of First B737 MAX
LOT Polish Airlines and Boeing [NYSE:BA] celebrated the delivery of the first 737 MAX for the carrier, ushering in the new and improved 737 airplane into the central and east Europe market. The jet is also the first MAX placed by leading airplane lessor Air Lease Corporation (NYSE: AL) (ALC). LOT, the Polish flag carrier, plans to take delivery of additional MAX airplanes as part of its strategy to profitably grow its airline. “We are proud to be one of the first carriers in the world with the state-of-the-art Boeing 737 MAX aircraft in our short- and middle-haul fleet,” said Rafal Milczarski, chief executive officer, LOT Polish Airlines. “We are already one of the fastest growing European airlines and I am certain that this big step forward will help us achieve our goals of increasing our operational effectiveness and improving our service. With the most modern Boeing 787 Dreamliners and brand new 737 MAX we are the most comfortable airline for our customers, more cost efficient and last, but not least, friendlier to the environment. Thanks to the cooperation with our partners, LOT is again one step ahead to set the tone for shaping the future of aviation industry in our region.” The 737 MAX delivers the highest efficiency, reliability and passenger comfort in the single-aisle market by incorporating the latest technology CFM International LEAP-1B engines, Advanced Technology winglets, the Boeing Sky Interior, large flight deck displays, and other improvements. The efficiency gains have helped made the MAX the fastest selling airplane in Boeing history with more than 4,000 orders to date from 92 customers worldwide. “We are very pleased to announce this first 737 MAX lease placement with LOT, which is the first of six new 737 MAX 8s on long-term lease to the airline. The MAX 8 offers new efficiencies and an enhanced passenger experience that will better serve LOT’s growing route networks,” said Steven F. Udvar-Hazy, Air Lease Corporation’s Executive Chairman. ALC has 129 more 737 MAX airplanes on order. “LOT has been a valued customer for decades and we are delighted that it has become one of the first operators of the MAX in Europe,” said Monty Oliver, vice-president Europe Sales, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “The 737 MAX will provide LOT unmatched efficiency, range, reliability and operating costs all while continuing to provide a premium on-board experience for its passengers.” Apart from the six 737 MAX 8s, LOT plans to expand its fleet of super-efficient and passenger-pleasing Dreamliners by adding four more 787-9s by the end of 2019. The airline is using the new airplanes to grow its network. Since 2016, LOT has announced the launch of 42 routes, including long-haul service from Warsaw to Los Angeles, Newark and Kraków to Chicago. In May 2018, LOT will launch connections from Warsaw to Singapore as well as from Budapest to New York City and Chicago.
NEW LARGER DREAMLINERS TO SERVE LOT’s USA AND CANADA ROUTES
Three new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft seating 294 passengers each are scheduled to start operating on LOT’s routes to Chicago, New York and Toronto in the spring and summer of next year. Tickets for the connections served by the Polish carrier’s new planes are already available for sale There are currently eight wide-body Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft in LOT’s fleet. Each of them offers 252 seats in three classes: 18 in business, 21 in premium economy and 213 in economy. The deliveries of larger 787-9 Dreamliners are expected to commence in the spring of next year. Each of them will be capable of accommodating as many as 294 passengers (24 in business, 21 in premium economy and 249 in economy class). The Polish carrier has ordered the total of four larger B787 aircraft, with three of them starting service in 2018, and the last one joining the fleet in 2019. Three of the four new planes will appear next year on selected long-haul routes departing Warsaw. They will be added to LOT’s flight network based on the following time schedule: > to Chicago - from late March / early April > to New York (JFK) - from the beginning of May > to Toronto, Canada - from the beginning of July. Furthermore, this specific variety of the Dreamliner may be also used on selected flights to the South Korean capital city of Seoul. The 787-9 - the larger version of the Dreamliner - is almost 63 meters long, which makes it six meters longer than the 787-8 variant. It has been equipped with new generation Rolls-Royce Trent TEN engines that are interchangeable with the powerplants used in the smaller version of the Dreamliner, currently operated by LOT. The range of LOT’s new 787-9 aircraft exceeds 13,350 km and is by approx. 700 km longer than in the case of the 787-8. The 42 additional seats available aboard offer a considerable reduction in the per-passenger cost. According to Boeing’s data, the larger 787-9 is more efficient and more environmentally friendly than the 787-8. It consumes less fuel per passenger and boasts a longer range. “LOT was the first European airline to have introduced the Boeing 787 into its fleet. It was a far-sighted move that has been paying off ever since. Today the Dreamliner is our flagship plane and the pillar of our long-haul fleet. Acquisition of additional, larger versions of the Boeing 787 fits in with the company’s sustainable growth strategy for 2016-2020” – says Rafał Milczarski, LOT CEO. “The Dreamliner is currently the most technologically advanced wide-body passenger aircraft in the world. Its composite structure and state-of-the-art engines reduce fuel consumption and offer higher levels of comfort compared to other planes” – stresses Milczarski. The Boeing 787-9 - similarly to the smaller 787-8 version - will feature lie-flat business class seats. Laid out in the 2-2-2 configuration, they will provide passengers with ample room, offering the opportunity to sleep in very comfortable conditions. In addition to restaurant-type meals, the menu will also include a broad selection of wines, including original products also from Polish wineries. The premium economy class offers very comfortable seats in the 2-3-2 configuration, with a lot of legroom. The highly versatile meals are served on traditional, porcelain dishes, and the passengers enjoy a wide selection of beverages. Economy class seats will be available in the 3-3-3 configuration and are equipped with 6-way adjustable head- and footrests. Each of the seats, regardless of the travel class, will feature an individual In-Flight Entertainment (IFE) screen, a power socket and a USB port. What changes will be introduced in the 787-9 passenger cabin? Willing to meet the passengers’ expectations and striving to comply with their recommendations, LOT has introduced several meaningful modifications in the new plane. The IFE screens for first row business class seats will be installed on the wall, in front of the passengers, and not in the armrest, as it has been the case so far. This will enable the passengers to use the IFE system throughout the entire flight. The pitch of premium economy seats will be increased by LOT from 38 to 42 inches. Such a solution will provide the passengers with more freedom while moving throughout the cabin. A toilet available to premium economy passengers will be present in this section of the plane as well. LOT has opted for the more comfortable Zodiac Z300 economy class seats that are equipped with larger 10.6’ IFE screens. “The technology used in the Dreamliner allows us to offer the level of air travel comfort that cannot be matched by any other passenger plane, providing LOT with a competitive advantage over many other carriers operating on the market. Due to air humidity and cabin pressure values being higher than those experienced on other aircraft types, as well as thanks to LED lighting and electrochromic windows that can be dimmed at the push of a button, the designers have managed to minimize the effects of jet lag” - explains Rafał Milczarski. There are eight Boeing 787 aircraft in LOT’s fleet today. With the additional four expected in 2018 and 2019, their total number will increase to 12. But this is not all. LOT’s profitable growth strategy assumes that there will be at least 16 wide-body Dreamliner aircraft in the carrier’s fleet by the end of 2020. LOT is currently in the process of acquiring narrow-body and regional aircraft as well. The airline plans to receive six Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft between December 2017 and May 2019. These will be operated on the most popular short - and medium-haul routes. They will take LOT’s passengers, inter alia to London, Madrid, Tel Aviv, Vienna, Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt and Barcelona. In addition, LOT’s fleet will be expanded by six Embraer 195 planes capable of accommodating 116 passengers each (four more than currently) with the seats installed in the 2+2 configuration. These aircraft will be used, inter alia, to feed the Warsaw hub with passengers traveling from Central and Eastern European airports. According to LOT’s estimates, the number of passengers using the airline each year is expected to exceed 10 million by 2020, meaning that the number of customers will be doubled compared to the 2016 result. From mid-2019, the LOT capital group plans to have the fleet of 75 aircraft at its disposal. This number includes: planes operated currently by LOT (supplied by Boeing, Embraer and Bombardier), machines ordered by LOT, with their deliveries to be completed by mid-2019 (Boeing 787-9 and 737 MAX 8, as well as Embraer 195) and aircraft of the Estonian Nordica airline (primarily Bombardier CRJ), with some of them already operating within LOT’s network.

Hainan Airlines Launches Non-Stop Service between New York and Chengdu and Chongqing
Hainan Airlines, a unit of HNA Group and mainland China's only Skytrax Five-Star airline, this week begins two new routes between New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and the Chinese cities of Chengdu and Chongqing. In conjunction with the route launches, Services to Chongqing commence on October 21 and to Chengdu on October 27 from JFK's Terminal 4. Each route will operate twice weekly on Hainan Airline's fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. With a capacity for over 60,000 passengers per year, it is the only non-stop service offered between New York City and China's rapidly growing Sichuan province. Chongqing to New York will be Hainan Airlines' longest flight route—nearly 7573 miles. Sun Jianfeng, Hainan Airlines President said, "We're excited to be offering the only non-stop flights between the U.S. East Coast and the major cities of Chengdu and Chongqing. These new services represent the 13th and 14th non-stop trans-Pacific routes, following our West Coast launch earlier in the year. The opening of the new route is expected to significantly enhance exchanges and collaborations concerning culture, the economy, and politics between the two countries and to further improve both Chengdu and Chongqing's status as key global economic centers." HNA Group's focus on the New York routes is a sign of confidence in the relationship between the U.S. and China as a primary travel and tourism partner. According to statistics from the National Travel and Tourism Office, 2016 saw almost 3,000,000 Chinese tourists enter the USA (an increase of 466% since 2009), with more than 800,000 visitors to New York alone. The total Travel and Tourism Exports for the year was more than $32 billion. Commenting on HNA's tourism strategy, Adam Tan, CEO of HNA Group said: "We are continuing our expansion in the tourism and travel sectors globally, as we strive to build closer connections for world travelers. HNA will also be sponsoring a range of high-profile annual gala events over the course of the coming weeks as it showcases its commitment to New York City. HNA will be the title sponsor of the annual Lincoln Center Fall Gala (October 23), the Asia Game Changer Diplomacy Champion Partner at the Asia Society Asia Game Changer Awards (November 1), and the presenting sponsor of the China Institute Blue Cloud Gala (November 2). Each event is the partner organization's biggest of the year and highlights HNA's growing presence in the U.S. At the Asia Game Changer Awards, in particular, HNA will recognize the important role of Chengdu's Giant Pandas, which have been an integral symbol of bilateral diplomacy between China and the U.S. over the past 45 years. Connecting the US to China's growing regional centers is a core element of HNA Group's strategy, supporting increased capacity and expanding cultural exchanges between the two nations. Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province, is widely recognized for its Giant Panda Breeding Center. But this traditional home of Sichuanese cooking city is fast-becoming the latest stop on the global food trail, as Chengdu is Asia's first UNESCO City of Gastronomy. Chengdu also strikes the perfect balance of traditional Chinese customs and modern cultural elements, from the many traditional tea houses to the 150 museums it boasts. Chongqing is a major commercial center of 30 million people, renowned for its distinctive spicy cuisine, and its busy port along the Yangtze River. Chongqing is the home of the UNESCO World Heritage site of The Dazu Rock Carvings and Chinese religious sculptures and carvings that date back to the 7th Century. United Airlines and Audubon International Team Up to Protect Raptors at New York-Area Airports
United Airlines and its award-winning Eco-Skies program are teaming up with Audubon International, the not-for-profit environmental education organization dedicated to sustainable natural resource management, to protect raptors – including hawks, ospreys and owls – in and around New York-area airports and resettle the birds-of-prey at suitable golf course habitats where the species are more likely to thrive. The United Eco-Skies Raptor Relocation Program, which the airline plans to launch at Newark Liberty International Airport later this month, will protect at-risk and threatened species such as the American kestrel by transporting the raptors to golf courses certified within the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program. As the official airline of the PGA TOUR®, United is uniquely positioned to help identify suitable golf course habitats with Audubon International for relocation purposes and help inform the public on the importance of environmental sustainability. Additionally, United and Audubon International will work closely with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which partners with other agencies to safely capture threatened birds at New York-area airports. United's Eco-Skies program represents the company's commitment to the environment and the actions taken every day to create a sustainable future. In January, Air Transport World (ATW) magazine named United the Eco-Airline of the Year for the second time since the airline launched the Eco-Skies program. In 2016, United made history by becoming the first U.S. airline to begin use of commercial-scale volumes of sustainable aviation biofuel for regularly scheduled flights out of its hub in Los Angeles. The airline also invested $30 million in U.S.-based alternative aviation fuels developer Fulcrum BioEnergy, Inc., which represented the single largest investment by any airline globally in alternative fuels. Last year, United became first U.S. airline to repurpose items from the carrier's international premium cabin amenity kits by partnering with Clean the World to donate hygiene products to those in critical need. Additionally, as part of United's commitment to operating an environmentally friendly and responsible airline, the carrier added a carbon footprint measurement to its 2017 Global Performance Commitment. United is committing to achieving a lower gross carbon footprint than its two largest U.S.-based competitors this year, as measured by carbon dioxide-equivalent per available seat-mile.

The various policies and plans introduced at the event will be sequentially supplied to Korean customers through the travel industry. Alitalia, where Etihad Airways has 49% stake and participated as its partner, operates direct flights from Incheon to Rome three times a week. As a member of SkyTeam, it is also operating a codeshare with the Korean Air in case of Rome and Milan route. Recently, it has been keen on rebranding, such as putting shades on logos and updating crew uniforms. The main route, Incheon-to-Rome direct flight, is being operated by the schedule of departing from Incheon at 13:55 on every Monday, Friday, and Sunday and arriving Rome at 19:00 on the day. Rome-to-Incheon direct flight is being operated by the schedule of departing at 15:00, local time in Rome, on every Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday and arriving at 09:25 on the next day. The type of aircraft is Airbus A330-200, and it welcomes passengers with 3 classes: business, premium economy, and economy. Alitalia has been focusing on South American routes that satisfy the trends of European airlines. Boeing Domestic LCC Market Analysis and Prospect Press Conference
On the afternoon of the April 7th, Boeing's LCC (Low Cost Carrier) market analysis and prospect press conference was held at Conrad Hotel in Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul. The event was prepared to share analysis of domestic LCC market, which is showing steady growth, and prospects for long-term continuous growth, and Darren Hurst, Boeing's marketing manager of commercial aircraft in Northeast Asia region, made presentation. At the press conference, how environment of the airline business is created, the trends of low-cost airlines, and the situation of Korean market are introduced. ▲ Boeing's LCC market analysis and prospect press conference is held. ▲ Darren Hurst, Boeing's marketing manager of commercial aircraft in Northeast Asia region, made presentation. According to Darren Hurst's presentation, the growth rate of the aviation market is highly related to GDP growth. In recent years, the gap between them is getting slightly wider. Its reason is that as LCC continues to lower fares, these low fares stimulate the middle-class's desire to travel, and as trends of lowering oil price continues, airlines could create more revenue and provide benefit of lowering fares with some portions of the revenue. In other words, LCC is playing a big role in the growth of the aviation market, and it is spread to almost all continents for developing business. In particular, the transport capacity of LCCs has risen by an average of 11% each year from 2005 to 2016, and has grown enough to account for 30% of the total number of seats. By region, North America, Europe and Asia Pacific are the main markets for LCC. In each aviation market, LCCs account for 26%, 29% and 33%, respectively, which are lose to the global average. Especially, LCCs hold a key position in Southeast Asia that 50% of the total seats are occupied by LCCs operating in the region. However, in Northeast Asia and China, 3% and 8%, respectively, are below the global average, and Hurst explained that "the low share means that the potential for future growth is high". And, he said, "The growth of LCC is not large in North America where the market is mature, but it is steadily growing in Europe and Asia Pacific, with growth of more than 20 percent in both Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia." The backgrounds in which LCCs can generate profits might be the large number of travelers who want to travel at reasonable prices centered on growing markets, and the high efficiency business model which maintains high growth through efficient asset utilization and low price per seat. The point of the low price per seat becomes a driving force to stimulate users' demands as well as keeping the fare low. In other words, LCCs can maintain their business models with growth exceeding the average on the strength of an advantage that they are able to meet demands that the existing major airlines could not cope with by maintaining low fare through low price per seat and stimulating customers' demand for travel. Each network structure and business model will be different, but the unit price of LCCs is 20-40% lower than that of large airline. ▲ The gap between the growth rate of aviation market and that of GDP is getting bigger. ▲ LCC is developing business on almost all continents. ▲ The capacity of LCC is rising by an average of 11% every year, and it has grown to 30% of total seating capacity of aviation. ▲ North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific region are the major markets for LCC. ▲ The business model of LCC is also rapidly advancing. Next, the analysis of Korea's aviation market and LCC continued. Although showing growth by an average of 3% from 2006 until 2010, Korea's aviation market has grown to 9% since 2013. It was the period when the growth of LCC was prominent in Korean market. The existing major airlines only grew by 2% while showing the growth by an average of 20% since 2010 in carrying capacity. In addition, LCC accounted for 33% of the flight seats in 2016. Especially, the reason why LCC's growth recently stood out is that the majority of LCC airlines actively entered international flight market. Compared to June 2015 and 2017, international routes showed much growth on the strength of the routes to Japan, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific islands, while domestic transportations were only 3% higher overall. China is the only region that decreased growth, and Hurst analyzed it that "the decrease in the number of international routes crossing China seems to be affected by political factors". In addition, the proportion of LCCs in terms of the number of aircrafts owned by domestic airline companies is absolute with growth of 33% over the previous year. ▲ Korea's aviation market has showed growth of 9% since 2013. ▲ In terms of carrying capacity, LCCs in Korea has achieved an average of 20% growth since 2010. ▲ The growth of LCC is related to the increase of international routes. ▲ The proportion of LCCs in the increase of the number of aircrafts owned by airline companies is absolute. For the last section, features of Boeing 737 series that is recommended for LCC are introduced. First, about Boeing 737-800 aircraft in Boeing 737 NG(Next Generation) series, it is explained that, compared to its competitor's A320 model, it has a higher capacity, which in turn means higher passenger income and lower price per seat. In addition, it can manage the longer routes as it has a long range, and can operate efficiently due to its high reliability. In terms of reliability and profitability, compared to the existing Boeing 737 aircraft, the Boeing 737 MAX series, which is the next-generation Boeing 737 aircraft, achieved 14% less emissions, 40% quieter, and about 620 miles more flight distance, while they show similar performance. After the announcement, Hurst said, "The global aviation market continues to be robust on the strength of the rapid growth of LCC. This is also true of the Korean market. However, since LCC is still in the early stages of growth and there will be many opportunities for developing countries, LCC should strive to make business models more efficient and sustain growth." ▲ It is introduced that the Boeing 737 series is the best model for the Korean market where the proportion of international routes is increasing. ▲ The Boeing 737 MAX is an advanced model in emission, noise, and flight distance.
Randy Tinseth Boeing Commercial Airplane Sector Marketing Vice President Visiting Korea Press Conference
Boeing held press conference at its Korea branch office building on October 7. Randy Tinseth, Boeing Commercial Sector Marketing Vice President, presented that Northeast Asian market will grow its air traffic by an annual average of 2.6% for the next 20 years on the strength of the growth of low-cost airlines. Tinseth informed that low-cost airlines’ flights in Northeast Asia such as Korea, Taiwan, or Japan per week has increased about 600%, from 470 in 2011 to more than 2,700 in 2016. Its 37% for the annual average growth. At the position announcing the prospect of Boeing in Northeast Asia for the next 20 years, Tinseth said, “For the last 5 years, with the appearance of low-cost airlines, the number of the flights in the area has increased.” And, “In case of Korea, low-cost airlines led the growth of aviation market.” ▲ Randy Tinseth, Boeing Commercial Sector Marketing Vice President Randy Tinseth recalled when he visited Narita airport in Japan in the late nineties, and at that time all the airplanes were 747. After 15 years, when he went to the airport again, all the 747 airplanes were replaced with 777. Boeing expected that airlines of Northeast Asia will need 1,440 new airplanes valued at 320 billion dollars, from 2016 to 2035. It is shown that about 770 airplanes, more than half, will take widebody models like 787 and 777, and the other 600 airplanes will take narrow-body models like 737 MAX. Among 1,440 airplanes required for 20 years, about two thirds are replacement demands, and the other one third will be demands created by market growth. Recently, the number of seats per airplane is decreasing. This is because single-aisle airplanes became the mainstream. As these single-aisle airplanes became mainstream, flying short and medium-length trips nonstop became common. While the average number of seats per flight has decreased 20%, the number of serving cities has doubled. Tinseth explained that, with introducing smaller and more efficient widebody airplanes rather than large ones, it became possible for the airlines to run more direct flights at the world’s new markets. ▲ The percentage of commercial airplane types after 1990 is opened. ▲ It is expected that single-aisle type would lead the commercial airplane sector. From the 1950s, with the name, Current Market Outlook (CMO), Boeing has been researching and announcing the prospects of aviation industry. From 1961, it has been opening publically as statistics become basic strategies of Boeing product strategy and basic data of future business plan, and they can also help future strategy of customer companies (airlines, partners) by providing future prospects. As the forecast is more accurate and definite, it becomes advantageous to Boeing company, and its partners and customer companies. In this connection, nine indexes such as economic growth rate became definite, and the company started to research. The aviation industry is known as a field that has been steadily continuing the growth rate. Actually, when looking up the last 36 years, it slowed down or backed down for only two times. Tinseth entered Boeing in 1981, and since then, the growth rate of the aviation industry has grown six times. Especially, in this year, 2.9% for economic growth rate, 4% for flight passengers, 4.8% for cost travelers, and 4.2% for cargo transport are predicted to be increased. The number of passengers is also expected to be increased to 7.5 billion. Boeing divides the airplane types into three; single-aisle/wide-body/regional jet (less than 50 seats). Boeing expects its 737 next-gen type and MAX series will become mainstream. In aspect of the number of airplanes, the ratio of widebody type is 20%, but it is expected to occupy the half of the sales. Regional jets are seen from rather unique point of view, because of the reason that they would be the first replacements as future transportation. Meanwhile, for the next 20 years, Boeing announced that it will invest $5.9 trillion in the airlines around the world for delivering 39,620 new aircrafts. ▲ Boeing’s 2016 commercial airplane roadmap Boeing is establishing business strategy according to three standards including various forecasts, technologies and demands of customers. It is a policy of maintaining the broadest capacity and available product line-up and focusing on not only passenger planes but also cargo planes. Currently, a number of new models are being prepared, and in this regard, the greatest investment in its 100 years of history is in progress. Fully three major development projects are in progress at the same time. 737-MAX series development project is one of them. As it replaces 737 next-gen plan, CFM new engine family is introduced and a lot of aerodynamic development are added. Comparing to the original model, the capacity of passenger service has increased about 40 seats, and the interior and acceptability are being further innovated. Especially, Boeing expects 737-MAX will attract airlines as it has 25% higher fuel efficiency than current 737 series. Its first delivery is scheduled in the middle of next year, which is earlier than expected. At first, its completion was scheduled for 2018. The next notable model is 777-X series, and it is a renewal of 777, the most successful in history of aviation industry. It is bigger than the currently-in-use models, and there are two types in the series; 777-8/777-9. Both of them support new GE engine, and feature composite structure wings designed to be large. Similar to the current 787 type, a flight deck upgrade plan is being promoted, and its first delivery is scheduled in 2020. Lastly, improvement work is in progress for the current 787 to raise its reliability to the level of 777. ▲ Related to 787, a collaboration with Korean Air has emerged. ▲ With Seoul as a standard, 787-9 has the capability that covers most of the major cities around the world. The latest model that will be introduced in Korea is 787-9 Dreamliner model. In the first quarter of next year, 787-9 will be firstly delivered to Korean Air. Worldwidely, 15% of 787 routes are served in Northeast area. It is known that 314 planes had been delivered so far, and 120 million people boarded it. As the reliability of 787 has escalated to the best level in the industry, Boeing thinks that it is better than the competitors of the same level. 777 is the only model with higher reliability than 787, so it is stated that 787 is the second by reliability standard. The strength of 787 is introduced that it can be worked as a main model for pioneering a new market. It is a model served for 120 new destinations in 5 years, because certain destinations, in the past, could not be served with the original model as they weren’t profitable. Due to 787’s features such as its scale and fuel efficiency, new departures became possible. So, it is explained that airlines became possible to draft a route policy in different ways from the past. 787-9 model, which will be introduced in Korea, has tremendous radius of flying range when by Seoul as a departure standard. Randy Tinseth stated that he accompanied when flying directly from San Francisco to Singapore with 787-9 model, and, at that time, the travel time was 15 hours 58 minutes. While the current model should have at least one stop, 787-9 saved 4-5 hours by flying nonstop. Randy Tinseth said, “Northeast market will show dynamic growth, and, low-cost airlines will pull the growth inside it. Replacement demands will be steadily come up, and, among widebody types, the preference of small types tends to increase. Boeing expects 1,440 planes, and they are valued at 320 billion dollars. To satisfy rapid increase in demand, Boeing will provide the most perfect model in the world.” ▲ F-15K is placed at the entrance of Boeing Korea. There is much attention about which model will be displayed next. Q1. (Acrofan) While widebody type became the major type as Europe and the Middle East promote Hub airport strategy, the business structure in Korea is leaning toward LCC grouping and 787/737 single-aisle type as the demand of Southeast Asia direct flights increases. What influence do you think the trend will have on component production and maintenance cooperation maintained in Korea? Also, is contribution from Korean companies to 777-X level cargo plane industry, which is followed by 747 in distribution industry, possible? A strong collaboration is constructed with domestic partner. BS or additional collaboration is in progress in Korea, either single-aisle or widebody. In 2015, there was a purchase of about $500 million for Korean cooperative firms. We have been purchasing about 3 trillion won for the last 10 years, and this trend will continue. Moreover, no matter the airplane type is single-aisle, passenger plane or cargo plane, Boeing has strong cooperation with Korea, so I think Korean companies might have benefits. Q2. (Acrofan) Like ‘Air Seoul,’ the launch event of international flight, the international flights’ routes firstly launched at the southern part argue about the age of models, and forward deploy the competitors’ models. Although LCC is important, there is no appearance of Boeing when LCCs in Korea appeal their models. Is there any plan to overcome or reverse this tendency? Regarding LCC, the track record is strong. It is rapidly growing in Korea. It was possible as the growth factor is Boeing. We are satisfying at the present position, and I think we will succeed even when seeing from the present context. Boeing is globally successful, and large-scale airlines are selecting it. The U.S. and Europe are using Boeing, and especially 737 is doing great. As the affiliate of Asiana Airlines, ‘Air Seoul,’ as well as ‘Air Busan,’ is one of the airlines that do not use Boeing’s models. From now on, Boeing will strengthen close cooperation with two companies.
